Leroy Merlin Retail Academy Launches in South Africa

9 March 2026 Features

Leroy Merlin South Africa has officially launched its Retail Academy in Centurion, marking a significant step in professionalising retail careers within the home improvement sector. This state-of-the-art training facility aims to bridge the gap between employer demand and workforce readiness.

Purpose of the Retail Academy

The Retail Academy is designed to:

  • Deliver practical, workplace-integrated training.
  • Build technical, operational, and leadership skills.
  • Elevate retail as an aspirational and skilled career path.

Innovative Training Programmes

The Academy offers a hybrid learning experience, combining:

  • A digital learning platform with hands-on simulated environments.
  • Short practical modules and longer leadership or technical pathways.
  • Involvement of skilled-trade specialists, including plumbers, electricians, and builders.

Localised Curriculum for South Africa

Unlike imported programmes, the curriculum is tailored to South African laws, safety standards, and labour realities. Fully funded by Leroy Merlin, the Academy ensures that participants gain transferable and recognised skills.

Impact and Expansion

The Retail Academy has already achieved over 50% absorption of prior programme graduates into permanent roles. With plans to serve 600–800 employees annually, the Academy supports Leroy Merlin’s expansion, including new stores in Alberton and coastal regions.

Recognising Excellence

At the launch event, awards were presented to course completers and store “training ambassadors” who mentor others and sustain on-the-job learning. This initiative aligns with Leroy Merlin’s HR strategy of “grow, perform, belong,” reflecting the company’s long-term investment in people and stores.
