Leroy Merlin makes affordable DIY possible in Centurion

7 July 2025 News

Leroy Merlin South Africa opened its fifth—and largest—store in Centurion, Pretoria, in May. Spanning 15 000m², this new flagship outlet serves South African homeowners and tradespeople with a mix of quality products, practical solutions and a focus on community impact.

A big day for Centurion DIYers

On 30 May, local residents flocked to the grand opening for exclusive in-store specials, live DIY demonstrations and fun activities for children. Jacaranda FM kept energy high with a live broadcast from the packed parking area. Demand was so strong that finding parking turned into its own challenge—proof that Centurion’s appetite for home improvement is thriving.

Claudia Krishna, Leroy Merlin’s Omnicommerce Leader, explained, “This store means a lot to us. It’s our fifth store in South Africa and it only took our team a record-breaking seven weeks to set up from the moment we received the keys. That efficiency was all about staff dedication and teamwork.”

A customer-led approach to retail

Before opening, Leroy Merlin engaged with potential customers in the Centurion area, gathering insights to tailor their offering. Preview days were held for those who’d shared preferences, ensuring the final design and product range reflected local demand. This approach not only gave customers a sneak peek but also created authentic brand ambassadors who fuelled excitement within their communities.

Krishna highlighted that this Centurion location is the first in North Gauteng and that their local engagement ensures each store is relevant and competitive. Plans are now underway to accelerate national expansion, particularly given significant online engagement from coastal customers.

Showcasing local and sustainable solutions

Sixty percent of products in-store are sourced from South African suppliers, supporting local manufacturing and ensuring quality. Sustainability initiatives include solar power, rainwater harvesting and a focus on repair-and-reuse solutions. The store features beautifully designed kitchen and bathroom showrooms, showcasing exclusive Leroy Merlin brands and providing inspiration for homeowners.

Frank Dufourq, CEO of Leroy Merlin SA, said, “For us, being useful means more than just selling products. Our Centurion store brings this commitment to life through everything from skills workshops to our unique Neighbourhood Market.”

Community focus and job creation

The Neighbourhood Market—held at month-end—provides a no-commission platform for local makers and traders. The store itself will create 150 permanent jobs and support 20 young South Africans with specialised internships. Other value-adds include a drive-thru building yard for contractors, installation services, trailer hire, key cutting, gas refills, and an in-store Mugg & Bean café.

With stores now in Fourways, Greenstone, Little Falls and Boksburg, and a growing online presence, Leroy Merlin continues to support South African DIYers with affordable quality and genuine community engagement—making every home the best place to live.
