Elite Star Trading: A smarter way to strengthen your supply chain

Independent hardware and DIY retailers are under pressure to deliver better prices, broader product ranges, and consistent stock levels—while maintaining low risk and healthy margins. For many, the solution is to strengthen their supplier networks through voluntary buying groups like Elite Star Trading (EST).
EST connects retailers with trusted suppliers, negotiates competitive pricing, and backs this up with support services from marketing and training to operational tools. It’s a simple but powerful way for retailers to stay competitive without sacrificing independence.
One of the ways EST delivers value is through its annual regional trade shows in Durban, Cape Town, and Johannesburg. These shows are the perfect platform for retailers and suppliers to connect, seize exclusive show specials, and build relationships that lead to long-term growth.

DiY and Industrial Trade News attended this year’s Durban Trade Show at the ICC and the Johannesburg event at Gallagher Convention Centre—both well-supported, busy, and professionally executed. To boost attendance, EST hosted its annual regional general meetings (AGMs) for shareholder members at each venue, with presentations by Louis Greef and Rob Suttle. This format generated strong visitor turnout, giving suppliers ample time for one-on-one engagement with buyers.
Snacks, tea, and coffee were available throughout the day, with lunch provided, allowing visitors to engage without rushing. Both the Durban and Johannesburg shows were successful, with the Johannesburg show especially busy from start to finish. Suppliers noted excellent results at Durban, including new store sign-ups and orders placed on the day, proving the value of attending.
We also caught up with Medal Paints (see Supplier Spotlight) for insight into how suppliers are supporting retailers during difficult trading conditions. EST continues to create real value for retailers and suppliers by facilitating connections and commercial growth.

Medal Paints KZN: Standing by retailers in tough times
During the EST Trade Show in Durban, we spoke to Allan Joseph, regional sales manager for Medal Paints KZN, about the company’s ongoing success in the region.

Allan Joseph and Petros Tokwe – Medal Paints.
“At Medal Paints KZN, we understand that the current market is challenging—consumers are under pressure, and retailers feel the impact. That’s why our approach is built on loyalty, listening, and local insight. We don’t just sell paint; we provide a complete service package that supports our retail partners through the highs and lows.
Every area is different, and so are the needs of retailers. Whether it’s demographics, local conditions, or project-driven demand, we work closely with our customers to tailor the right product ranges, pricing, and merchandising strategies. There’s no one-size-fits-all thinking here—only collaboration and customisation.
The market is more competitive than ever, with new budget brands frequently coming and going, causing disruption. When that happens, we restore order—our customers know we’re in it for the long haul.
As South Africa’s largest supplier of paint by volume, Medal Paints brings stability and trust. Retailers know we have been around for decades and are committed to the future.”
This responsive, local approach has helped Medal Paints maintain its momentum in KZN, even in turbulent times.
