On 1 September 2025, Agrinet celebrates 75 years of driving solutions across South Africa’s agriculture, hardware, and retail industries. This milestone marks an opportunity to honour the company’s legacy, reflect on its progress, and look ahead to the future with renewed purpose.
From VETSAK to Agrinet: A legacy of resilience
Agrinet’s story began on 1 September 1950, emerging from post-war South Africa with a single mission – to give co-operatives the power to source and supply better. As VETSAK, a central buying organisation for agricultural co-ops in the Transvaal and Free State, the business was rooted in supporting farmers with the best tools, machinery, and inputs.
Over the decades, VETSAK became a national force in manufacturing and distribution, supplying everything from irrigation systems, PUTCO Buses, farm gates, and chemicals to tractors and fencing. By the mid-90s, as the market evolved, so did we – shifting from manufacturing to trade and eventually rebranding as Agrinet in 1996 to reflect our expanded national footprint.
In 1998, Agrinet transitioned from a co-operative to a private company, opening its gates to all retailers and allowing for more innovation, more reach, and more opportunity to serve.
Building on 75 years of expertise
Today, Agrinet is a solutions-driven wholesale powerhouse with over 16 specialist product divisions across categories like irrigation, plumbing, hardware, garden, tools and outdoor. We partner with top local and international brands – while also developing and growing our own stable of trusted house brands – to bring better pricing, quality, and service to our B2B clients across Southern Africa.
Our owned fleet, courier partners and warehouse network ensure consistent national reach, while investments in digital systems, online trading platforms and warehouse automation have ushered in a new era of omni-channel service excellence.
From the launch of our Bellville warehouse in 2019, to embracing route optimisation and demand planning tools, Agrinet continues to modernise operations while staying grounded in a legacy of hands-on reliability.
A promise that’s stood the test of time
The Agrinet gates, once symbolic of opportunity for farming success, now stand for something bigger – our promise that no product leaves our warehouse without passing through layers of expert sourcing, product vetting, and distribution precision. While our tools, technologies, and trading methods have changed, our core stays the same: to serve South Africa’s businesses with solutions that matter every single day, and to continue to build lasting relationships face-to-face.
