4 August 2026 News

Academy Brushware, in partnership with Sparrow FET College, has launched the Siyakha Academy, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at addressing the skills shortage in South Africa’s hardware and paint retail sector. This NQF Level 2 learnership equips youth with the technical knowledge and practical experience needed to excel in retail roles.

Programme Details

The Siyakha Academy offers a comprehensive three-month learnership programme that combines:

  • Classroom Training: Focused on technical product knowledge, including paintbrushes and rollers.
  • Practical Experience: In-store merchandising, customer service, and stock control.
  • Workplace Exposure: Manufacturing site visits and mentoring from industry professionals.
  • Accredited Qualification: Learners graduate with an NQF Level 2 certification.

Out of over 300 applicants, 30 learners aged 18–29 were selected to participate. Each learner receives a stipend, mentoring, and hands-on training to prepare them for employment in the hardware and paint retail industry.

Partnerships and Industry Support

The Siyakha Academy is a collaborative effort between Academy Brushware, Motoquip, and Sanlic House of Locks, with Sparrow FET College providing the educational framework. This partnership ensures that learners gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills tailored to the industry’s needs.

Learner Success Stories

The programme has already made a significant impact on its participants. Learners like Ofentse Mokhomo and Jonas Mashita shared how the academy has boosted their confidence and provided them with valuable skills for the workplace.

Academy Brushware’s MD, Alison Zweers, emphasised the importance of empowering youth to fill critical roles in the retail sector, while HR Manager Ntokozo Tshabalala highlighted the academy’s role in creating work-ready individuals.

Outcomes and Future Opportunities

Graduates of the Siyakha Academy are equipped with:

  • Technical Product Knowledge: Specialising in paintbrushes, rollers, and related products.
  • Retail Skills: Including merchandising, customer service, and stock control.
  • Employment Readiness: Exposure to supply chains and workplace environments.

This initiative not only addresses the skills gap but also creates meaningful employment opportunities for South Africa’s youth.
