National Solder Company (Nasco) is a leading African manufacturer and supplier of solders, fluxes, pure tin and lead products. Its products provide solutions for joining metals in the plumbing, electronic, electrical, bearing, engineering and automotive industries.
It supplies a wide range of solders and fluxes into the hardware industry and it is prudent for hardware retail staff to understand different applications and types of solders. Using the incorrect solder for an application can lead to failures, and often consumers blame the manufacturer, when in fact the wrong product has been used.
Consumers also need to be aware of the composition of the soldering products they purchase. Each type of solder has been designed for specific applications and using the incorrect solder for an application can lead to joint failures. All Nasco products are produced according to South African National Standard (SANS) standards and consumers should be aware of this as there are many cheap imports, which do not meet any standards. “All of Nasco’s products are also South African Technical Auditing Service (SATAS) approved and SATAS has approved our products against the SANS requirements”, says Jetin Daya, a director at Nasco.
Soft solders are solder sticks, blowpipes and wiping metals for use on galvanised sheeting, radiator work and general purpose, large joining requirements. Nasco has an extensive range of soft solder with different melting points.
The range of solder wire includes:
- 40T Resin Core solder wire (contains lead) for use on electrical joints. The solder contains a non-corrosive resin flux that cleans the surface while soldering.
- 30S Acid Core solder wire (contains lead) for use on galvanised steel joints. The solder contains a corrosive acid flux that cleans the surface while soldering.
- 97/3 Solid solder wire (lead-free) for use on copper pipe joints. This product has been designed specifically for the plumbing industry and is lead-free making it safe for use in areas where drinking water passes through a copper pipe.
Nasco Flux is a specialised flux designed specifically for use on copper pipes. The flux has been designed to work with 97/3 Solid solder wire. The flux is used first to prepare and clean the copper surfaces before applying the solder.
Soldering fluid for use on general metal surfaces. The fluid is used to prepare and clean metal surfaces before applying solder.
Nasco is open to offering in-store training to retail staff, to be better equipped offering advice to consumers.
“Our website clearly indicates what products should be used for what applications. During the course of the year, we are planning on adding educational material to our website, which details exact products for applications, techniques and safety tips for consumers. We also have experienced staff that are a phone call away and can help with any technical or safety queries,” concludes Daya.
