Skil exits South Africa

Skil exits the local market.

Since the end of February 2017 Bosch Power Tools will no longer supply the Skil brand to the South African market and Africa. Skil has been sold to one of its manufacturers.

An era has come to an end on the continent. In 2014, Skil celebrated its 90th birthday. It entered the market in 1924 when the company’s founder Edmond Michel invented the first electric handsaw. Since then, the company has grown from strength-to-strength, becoming a household name identified with convenient, affordable and simple to use handheld power tools.

Today, it is one of the market leaders in DIY power tools, professional tools through its Skil Masters range, and garden tools with its Skil Urban Series products. Numerous Skil tools have passed independent ‘best-in-test’ reviews in several different countries.

Over the years, it has introduced many innovations, such as the introduction of variable speed control in 1964, which can be found today on a variety of different power tools. Other innovations include the automatic belt control, first introduced in 1978, to keep sanding belts perfectly on track and the Equaliser sanding frame for smooth sanding.

For the foreseeable future Bosch will continue to stock spares as per the standard Bosch service agreement – seven years. The two year guarantee offered by Skil power tools will still be honoured.
