Mr Price launches paint department

IMG_2973Cedar Paint and one of South Africa’s largest home décor retailers, Mr Price Home, have partnered to bring colour, textures, advice and convenience to the South African consumer.

From October, Cedar Paint will be trialing a concept along with Mr Price Home where its paint and other selected paint equipment will be available through the stores. If one considers décor, the first thing that comes to mind is colour and then further down the line textures. Thus it made business sense for the two companies to have décor and paint at the same outlet, bringing convenience and service together.

“It makes perfect sense to have a complete solution for the decorative market through Mr. Price Home. The opportunity to extend on the service offered currently to the consumer is now enhanced with colour and texture advice along with the technical support of product and remedies for common substrate issues. The complete package is a turnkey solution offered by Cedar Paint to the Mr. Price stores and will be a touch different to the way we are historically accustomed to selling and buying paint. The intent is to create a wow experience for the consumer.” Says Shane Weeden, national sales and marketing from Cedar Paint.

Mr Price has proved that its stores are appealing to a very large spectrum of the LSM category and the company’s motto has always been value for money coupled with awesome service, and this is something which fits with Cedar’s philosophy.

The opportunity to supply Mr Price was initiated by the retailer and Cedar Paint has been impressed with the support from the retailer. “They have treated us like partners in their business even though we are only a supplier,” says Eben van Zyl, managing director from Cedar Paint.

However, the partnership came with its own challenges. “Usually it is all about mindsets – the hardest obstacle usually is to get the buy-in from staff on both sides of the fence. This task, however, was a push over, which has really made all parties very excited,” he explains. “Another challenge was setting up the ‘turnkey’ solution required by Mr Price Home. Thankfully there are some stunning businesses that have come to the party. Hendrik and Josien from Storeworks have been awesome in putting the look and feel together as have my Marketing Team, Michelle and Albert who have really put tons of effort into the mix to give Mr Price Home the look they require.” Says Weeden.

The deal will be fruitful for Cedar Paint as well. Mr. Price Home will only be stocking Cedar Paint together with affiliate paint accessory brands such as Academy Brushware to name but one. The great opportunity really is to strengthen the Cedar brand and to cement it as one of the leading value for money paint brands in the country.

Added to value for money is that consumers will now have the convenience of selecting their paint while shopping for décor. “Mr Price is one of the leaders when it comes to home décor trends, and with the addition of paint and some DIY accessories, the customer will have a fabulous décor experience,” says van Zyl.

Consumers will be able to select any of the colours from the Cedar range, and for the time being, the company does not expect the product offering to stray far from paint and affiliated products, however, one never knows.

The concept will be rolled out at the Mr Price Home store in Strubens Valley in October and the only short-term challenge for Cedar is to see enough paint being sold through the outlet. “I think we have seen enough positive energy coming from them and their staff, so if it can continue like it is, there will be no problem and that the venture will be a roaring success,” says van Zyl.

“From a Cedar perspective, we want to ensure that the customer leaves Mr Price Home with the right product and advice. From Mr Price Home’s perspective, I think they would like to increase the feet coming through he doors,” concludes van Zyl.
